USS Essex - Vintage Kit Build!

Arnold Tillman, from Jacksonville, FL, sent us pictures of his "vintage" USS Essex! According to Arnold,
he purchased the kit from Model Shipways in Bogota, N.J. about 35 years ago and started working on it back at the beginning of 2010. Talk about a long time in the closet waiting for some attention! Great looking build Arnold - we can't wait to see the finished model!

And don't forget, Model Shipways  will be releasing the USS Essex within the next few months! Stay tuned - we're almost ready for production!

  1. I have an old unbuilt Essex kit by this company. There appear to be no instructions, and it's not carved out enough to accommodate the cannon -- there are no gun ports, and the amount of wood that would be need to be removed for them is extensive. Is this normal? I'm looking for good tips about how to tackle this ship.

The Essex shown in the above pictures started as a solid Mahogany hull which required extensive removal of wood down to the gun deck. Also remove the wood at the transom. Then mark off and cut out the gun ports. I have an instruction manuel that I bought separate from Model Shipways about 30 years ago. I would gladly make a copy of it for you.

  2. Thank you for your kind offer! I'm very interested unless it's the book by Jim Roberts, which I have already received as a PDF from another helpful Essex modeller. dan.knauss{at}gmail{dot}com
