Conversion of Model Shipways Solid Hull Kits?

Along with our ship model kit designers, we have been kicking around the idea of converting our various
Model Shipways Solid Hull Kits to either Plank-on-Frame or Plank-on-Bulkhead, depending upon the model - giving the modeler a truer modeling experience. Chuck Passaro has done some great work in making planking "easy" with the Pinnace and Longboat kits and we believe we can convert our Model Shipways Solid Hull Kits, such as the Phantom New York Pilot Boat, to a planked version.

What are your thoughts? Sound off and let us know!

  1. I am working on your Brig Syren. I would be very interested in POF or POB versions of some of your other ships.

      Very good kit.
Since I am a POB builder, I would be interest in that.

  2. Having just built the phantom and now working on the MS Willie L Bennet - I think this is a fantastic Idea. I loved building the Phantom but felt like I was missing out on a good portion of the ship building experience. Would you guys be replacing? Or adding too.. (having both options).

    1. The goal would be to convert and discontinue solid hulls.

    2. I think its a great idea. It would also provide an oportunity to make some improvements. I woul dlove to see the Sultana enlarged to 1/4 in scale.

  3. Go for the POB conversions especially if Chuck is doing the conversion. He is a very talented guy. His instructions are excellent.

  4. I think it would be a mistake to convert the simpler kits like Phantom to plank on frame or bulkhead. My intro to ship modeling was a solid hull Bluenose, and having built planked models subsequently, I don't think I would have ever completed the model if it plank on frame: I just didn't have the modeling skills.

  5. I would be thrilled to see some of your solid hull kits converted to POB or POF. Especially Kate Cory and Dapper Tom!!

  7. I will not build solid hull kits. I would also like to see more complex kits from Model Shipways, like Wasa or Sovereign Of The Seas.

  8. Re-run the KATY (of Norfolk); the Newsboy; the Prince de Neufchatel; 1851 schooner yacht "America".
How about an old "yellow box blast from the past" such as the merchant brig "Volante"; "Young America"? or, another William Webb design, "Sword Fish" (formerly, a Marine Model Co. kit)?
Looking for a new research? How about the "Ann McKim"?
My personal Model Expo favorite is the Kate Cory although I'm not sure if I'd like the change to p-o-b. This kit is beautiful and the present cost is reasonable, especially when it is on sale.
By the way, how is the "Roger B. Chaney" production?
    Good luck!

  9. I would like to see the Harriet Land get POB treatment. I would love to see her as a larger model as well. My intro to wooden ships was the Sultana, so I would leave that one as solid. I think the idea of a solid Phantom and POB Phantom is pretty cool, and hope you give it some credence.
PS- PLEASE bring back the Roger Taney!
